Dr. Maria's Personal Story |
|
The following excerpt chronicles the motivation behind Dr. Maria's desire to create an online community dedicated to the education and promotion of anti-aging health and medicine. I was speechless! In 1984, my brother had a massive stroke at the tender age of 30. As a non-smoker, non-drinker, health conscious and fit individual, my brother would have been the last person you would have thought to have a stroke, even at age 50. But it is real and it happened. I was in the midst of my Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (PM&R) specialty-training program at University of California at Los Angeles Medical Center at that time. Despite the latest technology at my disposal and experts available, there was little that I could do to help my brother. It was too late. Strokes, cardiovascular disease and cancer account for over 80% of all deaths in the United States. As you grow older, the chances of getting any one or all of these diseases increases. Having spent years in my specialty of rehabilitation and treating those who suffered from these debilitating diseases, I felt a sense of continued helplessness. Once a major illness strikes, it is very difficult even for the best rehabilitation program in the world to reverse the damage and return the patient to optimal health. Our body is a delicate machine. Damage done is not easily repairable, let alone reversal. I have seen in my patients and experienced first hand that life is never the same after a major illness. In my personal life, the story is the same. My parents, children, and husband were all on some type of medication for conditions ranging from high cholesterol and hypertension to allergies and frequent infections. No one likes to take medication, but what choice do we have? We now know that diseases such as hypertension and diabetes are not stand-alone entities. They actually reflect a natural progression of the aging process. In other words, aging is nothing more a collection of such common diseases. Instead of battling the diseases when they surface, doesn't it make sense to delay the onset of these dreaded diseases? Think of it this way. Young people seldom get sick. If you could be young again, you would not have to worry as much about these diseases to begin with. With the advent of technology and increasing research in the past 20 years, this hypothesis is now a reality. Having spent several years in an intensive program conducting clinical studies and practicing alternative natural supplementation as an adjunct to traditional medication for treatment of diseases and to retard the aging process, I have been able to develop anti-aging programs that are personalized for each of my patients. I employ only those alternative modalities that are approved by the FDA and that which have proven clinical results. I also become a member of various physician-based organizations including, ACAM (American College Advancement of Medicine). Many of the dynamic, scientific based topics of complementary medicine are discussed in ACAM conference meetings. We have become the pioneering physicians interested in preventing age-related diseases, silent premature deaths and Alzheimer's disease by utilizing non-surgical and alternative medicine.. Despite the latest advances in anti-aging medicine, the fact remains that:
For these reasons, my colleagues and I have decided to build and launch eAntiAging.com.
