What is the link between vitamin C and diabetes?

Transport of vitamin C into cells is vacillated by insulin, and many diabetics do not have enough intracellular vitamin C. Therefore, a relative vitamin C deficiency exists in many diabetics despite adequate dietary consumption. Vitamin C in doses of 2,000 mg per day has been shown to reduce the accumulation of sorbitol in the red blood cells of diabetics and to inhibit the glycosylation of protein, both of which are linked to many complications of diabetes, especially eye and nerve disease. Although lower levels of vitamin C achieved normal sorbitol levels, supplementation with a minimum of 2 grams of vitamin C daily in diabetics appears warranted due to its other important effect.
